Magnetofunky Show no. 1.

[intro theme]

Welcome to the debut episode. It's Monday Jan. 2nd, 2017. I'm Larry Winfield, poet, pirate radio dj, emerging sculptor, part time mad scientist, etc, in the pursuit of grid power to the people. but first, let's open up with Arizona rockers Nothing ADD All...

[song] - 00:40

Yeah, that was Land of Special Interests - Nothing ADD All, a punk band from Gilbert, Arizona, a suburb of Flagstaff. Formed in 2007, the band incorporates punk, ska, reggae, and hardcore into their energetic live shows. Cool...

This is a laid back (and often explicit - you bet your ass) weekly international podzine of extremely eclectic music and progressive politics, with a focus on energy independence for the 99%. My podpages are 1223studios.com/mfunky.h and facebook.com/1223Studios.

[Grid Theory] - 04:56

Ok, the show has two Grid-related segments - "Theory" and "Practice" in all it's mutations...

So, to start with, What the hell is this show about?

It's about being part of the population always written out and written off almost every dystopian prepper fantasy of the shit hitting the fan and the cities always going to hell first, with only a small group of prepared 1%-ers and a couple lucky middle class and poor folks along as monster and zombie bait.

It's about being one of the many people who won't be buying anything made by Tesla without winning the friggin lottery...

Anyway, I got a written statement, let's go there...

The selection of the popular vote loser as the next President will cause nothing but chaos in this country for years to come. There's gonna be a lot of corruption and strife in the coming police state, while the federal government is being dismantled, but one crucial part of the infrastructure is too damn delicate - the nation's power grid. For starters, the global grid is a sitting duck for another 'Carrington event' sized power outage - no country has enough transformers to restore its whole grid, and the huge ones are made in China. Slowly.

Regardless of Twitler's promises (yeah, stole that from lefty blog), any infrastructure projects will be self serving, and a means to drain the Treasury. Now, I live in San Francisco, in a blue state opposing Trump. The state and city will support the local grid, but because we are anti-Trump I can see our grid attacked by red hat sappers, so we still need an emergency grid.

Nothing fancy, nothing more than, say, up to four 12V batteries, enough juice to run a few basic things, and a way to recharge them without the grid (your gas generator, solar panels, windmill, perpetual motion devices, molten salt thorium reactor, etc.)

But what if you're not upper middle class in a gated enclave? In an apartment, how do you keep a bunch of car batteries inside safely? And solar panels on the building roof? In an SRO? Regardless, the working poor need a working fridge and a radio too during a blackout. Plus, having your own small power supply gives you a measure of power, of autonomy. In these days where we see our power as citizens being molested...

So, aside from my continuing resistance against this Ferengi-styled regime already oozing over the land, Magnetofunky will feature indie music, plug events and cultural political etc., and share what I find out in answer to a simple question: how do you recharge a car battery on day 3 of a blackout, with no solar panels or a windmill? (and no car either, jeez...)

There are ways...

[Open Mic Stage] - 08:26

Ok, the return of the Open mic stage resumes with a couple songs,

First, Departures - Portrayal, an Indie-Rock, Post-Punk, Goth duo (Rob Tranter & Joe Crook) from Shrewsbury, UK, who create a unique and cinematic sound. Self-released debut album ‘To the Black Sea’ was released in 2015 to a number of impressive reviews, described as 'a stunning début which deserves to be lauded by the music press’ by Right Chord Music. Two new singles ‘Solecism’ and ‘Sea’ were released in early 2016.

It's followed by Vague Utopia, the new single by Tia Gostelow, an Indie, Rock artist from Tropic, QLD, Australia. It follows her debut solo single, State of Art, a hypnotic, syrup-dipped track exploring “the realisation that the person who you were so in love with isn’t really as great as you thought they were”. Compared by her fans to First Aid Kit, Julia Stone, Stevie Nicks and “Fleetwood Mac crossed with Bjork”, Gostelow has already shared the stage with some of Australia’s finest and she’s now looking forward to touring the East Coast and releasing her debut EP this year...

[songs] - 09:57; 13:21

["Geeknotes"] - 16:46

Geeknotes: Bilingual Reading at Mills College...

Hey, Geeknotes!

All right, we have one Bay Area event listed this time, but first, the calendar: Wed. the 4th is Int'l Braille Day, and Sat. the 7th is Int'l Programmers Day. The 7th is also the birthday of poetry buddy Tara - uh, sorry, Dr. Tara Betts, Visiting Lecturer in English at University of Illinois at Chicago, and author of the books Arc & Hue and Break the Habit, among the many props I could drop.

On Monday, January 9, from 6 PM - 9 PM, PST, at Mills College, 5000 MacArthur Blvd, in Oakland, there's gonna be a fantastic bilingual reading featuring local authors whose work has been translated. They'll read in both English and another language. The featured readers are Ali Eteraz, Mateo Hoke, Achy Obejas, Carlota Caulfield, & Hugo García Manríquez.

This event is free and open to the public.

If you have promos, pluggers, gig info, an art opening, etc, send me an email. The address is [email protected]. And bands, artists and poets - download links, no attachments, please, and no promises...

[Practice] - 18:58

Ok, here's where we get into the 'Practice' end of things, of what works, what's been forgotten or suppressed, and what's BS (and in some cases, the whatsit does work, but we sho' don't have it, and the inventors making a public demo invariably get either disgraced or die from convenient strokes or heart attacks). Now, this show ain't sponsored, I'm not a scientist, engineer or inventor (yet), but I can read and watch crazy YouTube videos and think up wild crap like the next person, and after what Mythbusters did to the Bedini motor, I approach proponents and debunkers with the same juandiced eye - all I care about is whether it relates to my scenario - can it keep my fridge running. And since I don't have a buck or a professional reputation riding on the answers to my inquiries, we can look at everything. Stay tuned.

Ok, we got one more tune, another number by the UK duo Portrayal. Here's 'Slow Wait'

[song] - 20:13

That's it for show no. 1.
