Covid Tsunami Low Tide

Episode Transcript. Length - 41:19

Magnetofunky No. 174. It's Friday, December 4th, 2020.

[intro theme]

Hey. Larry here. Ok, it's a week after Thanksgiving, the latest nationwide Covid superspreader event, meaning we're at the latest tsunami low tide with a huge surge in infections expected next week before the big Xmas/New Years double spreader. We're at ~282K US deaths, could be at 350K by Biden's Inauguration, but we're still dealing with Lame Duck L"Orange and his post-election temper tantrum terrorism.

Anyway, this episode I made some progress on the bike cargo trailer and actually got my camo tarps, meanwhile a few new songs came my way and I added them to a few curated tunes to go with the theme of IOKIYAR nutjob, complete with news clips...

[song] - 01:30

Ok, that was a clip from CNN last week - one of the many examples of a Judge dismissing a Trump campaign lawsuit, number 29 out of how manyby now? It's followed by Be a Fascist to a Fascist - My Mind, a Punk, Power-Pop group from Philadelphia that posted this lead-off piece from the album Path Masher to FMA way back in 2010.

This is a laid back (and often explicit - you bet your ass) international podzine and personal journal of extremely eclectic music and progressive politics, with a focus on energy independence for the 99%. My podpage is 1223studios.com/mfunky.h. The Twitter is @Magnetofunky.

Tarp Time

In Grid Theory,

Basically, my pollworker paycheck came in early the day of the last episode, right before the holiday week, so I could finally take care of the camo tarps and upgrade the folding shopping cart into an actual bike touring cargo trailer.

The 10" wheels I thought I'd have to get online were actually now in stock at a downtown Ace Hardware store, so I took care of that on Sun. of holiday week. They're slightly heavier than the steel wheels, and according to the specs can carry 250 lbs. each - 100 lbs. more than the now-backup wheels, though 100 is my cargo limit.

The new wheels take a 1/2" axle instead of 3/8", but a while back I got a set of 3/8" to 1/2" bushings from the local hardware store. They fit nice and snug with a rubber mallet, and the wheels spin just fine, no warp or wobble.

The rest of the day and Mon. was spent window shopping and customer review shakedowns of the last few online vendors I narrowed down for the tarps. I picked the vendor Tarps Now and ordered two 10 x 12 ft. heavier duty camo utility tarps, then got in some bike exercize riding up to Nob Hill to another Ace store that had the last 5 gal. bucket screw lid in stock, so I'm half done with the diy bear canister.

Tu. and Wed. I picked up a small tube of blue threadlocker for the nut on the trailer hitch, then finished shopping for quarantine comfort food - mac and cheese made with cauliflour pasta, chocolate cream pie instead of pumpkin - and that's my last buying anything for the holiday week - if I went out at all on Thur. or Fri. it would be biking to the park, to reflect on the reimposed lockdown, on my 9 mo. of obsessive hand washing and fear of getting even a cold because 3 people in my bldg. died from COVID, at least one being a red-hat anti-masker----[bell]

ok, finishing up the trailer in a bit...

[Back To The Stage] - 09:14

Ok, Back to The Stage, continuing with a set in two parts - first, a brand new tune, Cold Sweat - DECOUPLR, AKA Philadelphia electronic soul duo Bailey Walker and Adam Laub, from their debut album DIGITAL BONFIRE (coming out February 2021)...

[song] - 09:40

[Nutjob set]

Ok, here in the middle we have the IOKIYAR nutjob portion, where, on Newsmax TV's The Howie Carr Show, Trump Lawyer Joe DiGenova Calls For Ousted Cybersecurity Chief Christopher Krebs To 'Be Shot At Dawn', followed by Christian Eliminationist Pastor Rick Wiles Wants Firing Squad For Democrats - something to remember the next time the corp. media lectures anybody on the Left about their 'tone' in talking about red-hats. then another curated number - Denial - STYPTIC, an Avant-Garde, Metal, art rock band formed in 2003 in Nis, Serbia. This is from the 2014 album "Noesis". Looks like their last record dropped in 2015.

[songs] - 13:23; 14:12; 15:16

Ok, wrapping the set with another new number from the previously featured, NYC founded, LA based band Mercury and the Architects. The song is Autopilot - Crack the code. Take off your TV head. Cool video...

Geeknotes: BSMFT, Covid Tracker...

Hey, Geeknotes!

Instead of wasting breath on a detailed recounting of the many, many acts of electoral drive-by attacks and attempted judicial roadside bombings of urban non-white ballots (otherwise known as 'a flurry of frivolous lawsuits'), I'm putting it all in a box bound for the Island of Misfit 2020 Toys with the label 'BSMFT'.

That stands for BSMFTake your pick - Terrorists, Traitors, and Trumpers, the gift that keeps giving all the way to next summer. Instead, I'm looking at the Covid vaccines, specifically what Phase 3 clinical trials are proceeding, regardless of 'Oper. Warp Speed.' I don't expect widespread progress - doses going into arms - until after the Spring Equinox; we may be at half a milion US deaths by then thanks to herd mentality assholes.

Right now there are 10 official vaccines in Phase 3, and 3 trials are doing phases 2 & 3 simultaneously, so I'm just doing 10. None of these have long term immunity data, some are two shots, some one shot, but I'm not sold on any of them until these trials finish.

The Pfizer/BioNTech version, Oxford's AstraZeneca and Moderna's vaccines are getting all the press. Meanwhile;

China’s CanSino Biologics vaccine is testing in Russia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Mexico.

Beijing's Sinovac Research vaccine CoronaVac is testing in Brazil, Turkey and Indonesia.

India's Bharat Biotech is Phase 3 testing Covaxin in 25 centers around the country.

Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen is testing the Ensemble vaccine in the US and Belgium.

China's Sinopharm and the Wuhan Institute of Virology are testing a vaccine with no name in Peru, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates.

US company Novavax is testing NVX-CoV2373 in the UK.

The Gamaleya Research Institute in Russia is testing Sputnik V in Belarus and the United Arab Emirates, and they claim 92% effective, but the general medical community says 20 participants ain't exactly Phase 3.

The only good news about these trials, if you're thinking about volunteering, is that there's little to no risk of contracting Covid from any of these vaccines, but until they work out the side effects, I can tolerate wearing a damn mask for another 5 or 6 months.

In the meantime, I'd like to pretend it's already a mythical Jan. 21st, a day we can hopefully no longer give a shit what Civil War red-hat freaks say, just watch out for them trying to cough on you...

And hey, new feature - if you like, or hate the show, give it a quick review. Go to ratethispodcast.com/mfunky and I'll read it here in Geeknotes and either prise it or piss on it - that's how the 1st Amendment works.

Cargo Trailer 2.0...

Ok, In Grid Practice,

Well, on Thur. I did ride up and over to GG Park, tried an alternate Google Maps route that confirmed the 'wiggle' is the only easy uphill route from my crib to the panhandle. While riding I visualized the modified cargo trailer conveniently carrying the gear. Spent a few minutes at Hippie Hill in the quarantine sun.

Back home I loaded the basic gear mockup style in the un-modified cart (the sudio bag, bucket, camp table and chair and the power plant), naturally the duffel doesn't fit. I could sit it across the top, but the ends stick out 6" over each side, and it doesn't give me a place to put the bivy and handlebar harness if I wanna take the cart through a grocery store with the pannier trunk bag on my shoulder and the bare bike locked up outside. Putting the duffel within the cart space would only work if I removed the front grill and replace it with bungees or a cargo net. That major change makes it harder to swap out if the cart itself broke, but it's doable if I add aviation snips and zip ties to the general tool kit.

So, time to make a cargo net. I already had two 50-ft. rolls of paracord, and checked a few videos to get the gist. I couldn't sleep late Sat., so I wound up using an entire 50 ft. roll making a functional net that's big enough to loosely cover the cart's front frame.

On Sun. this week I removed the front grill, cut and filed down the loose end rods from the top and sides, used the bottom ends as tie points as I zip-tied it to the base, leaving about 8" extended, just far enough to accomodate the bucket and big duffel.

I zip-tied the net to the front frame corners and sides. All that remains is to decide on an 18" x 24" floor board of polyurethane or MDF - 1/4" should be thick enough to support the overhang...

Last bit came on Tues. the 1st - my camo tarps arrived. A short arm inspection out of the box found no damage, and now I'm imagining the best ways to quickly roll and unroll these big tarps at camp and how to carry them...

[One More Tune] - 32:13

Ok, for this week's One More Tune, we close out with something we've had to largely do without in 2020 - a live gig recording. Starling and gXus from the alternative angsty folk metal shoegaze band ABANDONspree sent in a link to their latest release "LUCHAR! Live in Quantum", recorded in superposition, of course. The tune is Hiding Unicorns in Thunderstorms - Crank it.

[song] - 32:50

Well, OK.

[Closing] - 39:00

Hey, this show is a 1223studios joint.

I'm on almost all the popular podcast platforms, the latest being Acast. Show notes are on the podpage. Send email to [email protected]; Send reviews to ratethispodcast.com/mfunky.

If you like the show, tell your friends, and, never forget that soon-to-be-former Pres. Shithole has one skill - the long con. While he's been hard fundraising about $13M a day since the middle of Oct. for his phony coup attempt/civil race war, what the compliant 'both sides' media is ignoring is the very real possibility that he's already selling secrets to the Saudis, Putin, China (where he actually pays his fucking taxes) and whoever else will help him pay off that $450M nut and put getaway money in his pocket, with no interference from the GOP until it hurts their chances of controlling the Senate or takes dark money out of their clients' pockets. We may not know for a year or two how badly we got ratfucked by tRump on his way out, but none of us should be surprised...

Show themes "Rocket Power" & "Spy Glass" by NY musician and composer Kevin MacLeod. Some additional audio from freesound.org.

Next episode is set for whenever I have enough music and stuff to rant about, maybe another show before Xmas.

I'm Larry, trying hard to stay chill at my garrett in the Mission, and this is Magnetofunky, from San Francisco, where we will go through, not into, the darkness.
